Observations from the IMC Research Process

The K-Beauty Boom Goes Beyond the Brand

K-beauty’s breakout brands get the attention. But the manufacturers developing, producing, and scaling their products may offer the more durable opportunity.

  • Brand fragmentation is fueling ODM growth. Cosmax, Kolmar Korea, and Cosmecca Korea all reported record Q2 results, with revenue up 28%, 18%, and 40%, respectively. The common thread is not one viral product. It is a fragmented beauty market outsourcing more formulation, regulatory work, and manufacturing complexity to Korea’s leading beauty manufacturers (ODMs).
  • One hit is turning into many SKUs. Cosmecca described a “snowball effect,” as initial orders generate reorders and product extensions; Korean revenue rose 63%, led by 95% skincare growth. Kolmar’s Korean revenue increased 31% as successful sun-care brands scaled orders, with demand spilling into packaging subsidiary Yonwoo. Across the group, the pattern is similar: win the formulation, then expand the wallet.
  • The model is traveling. Cosmax’s US revenue jumped 79%, delivering its first quarterly profit, while China and Indonesia grew 33% and 38%. Cosmecca is taking another route, using FDA-compliant OTC infrastructure and turnkey capabilities to earn a 16.8% US operating margin despite lower revenue. The opportunity is evolving from Korean manufacturing capacity into global beauty infrastructure.

Capital is beginning to follow the same path. Guinness Atkinson has filed for the first dedicated U.S. K-beauty ETF, with proposed exposure spanning not just brands, but manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, and aesthetics companies.

Brands may come and go. The companies making, scaling, and packaging them can keep winning either way.
