RISING TIDES
Observations from the IMC Research Process

Goldilocks Restaurants. Not Fast Food. Not Fine Dining. Just Right.

Casual dining is finding a sweet spot: affordable enough to capture trade-down, but differentiated enough to earn a trade-up from the drive-through.

  • The middle is getting more attractive. The emerging strength in restaurants is not a broad return to eating out. It is a migration toward concepts offering the clearest value for the occasion. Fast-food prices have moved closer to the cost of a served meal, while premium restaurants remain difficult to justify for everyday occasions. Sitting between them are chains combining approachable checks with abundant food, broad menus and genuine hospitality.
  • Make the trade-up tangible. Chili’s (EAT) comparable sales rose 5.6%, with its $10.99 Big Crispy meal helping make the trade-up from fast food tangible. Cheesecake Factory (CAKE) delivered 5.8% comparable-sales growth and 2.7% traffic growth while restaurant-level margins reached a decade high. Red Robin (RRGB), meanwhile, improved traffic from a 5.5% decline a year ago to nearly flat as its $9.99–$16.99 Big YUMMM meals pushed value “beyond the drive-thru.”
  • Sell affordable indulgence, not discounts. Chili’s is pairing fast-food-like opening prices with full-service portions and hospitality. Cheesecake Factory is leaning into affordable indulgence—what management calls a “mini vacation”—without relying on heavy promotions. Red Robin is combining accessible bundles with more indulgent menu items. Different playbooks, same positioning: enough experience to justify trading up, and enough value to make trading down painless.

When both ends of the market feel expensive, “just right” becomes a powerful place to sit.
