All about beta in the tariff tantrum and subsequent rebound

The tariff tantrum and economic uncertainty have rattled US equity markets this year. From a factor perspective, it is beta and volatility that have driven returns.

Other styles/factors, including momentum, have been less important in the vacillation between risk off/risk on.

The Russell 3000 Index has climbed 20% since the low on April 8th, with the highest quintile beta stocks up over 41% for the period.
